The Road to Enlightenment

The Greyhound is a traditional English pub set in the heart of Lavenham, England's best-preserved Mediaeval village, in mid Suffolk. When first built around 1324, it was of single storey construction with a Great Hall in which was an open fire, with a dining table and bench seating. From the Great Hall a door opened onto the Master Bedroom in which the family slept.

The upper stories are thought to have been added in the mid 14th Century. This we can assume was carried out by somebody of considerable standing as the exposed ceiling beams are close together, a means of showing off wealth.

Lavenham was very much a working town with most of its considerable income derived from the wool and weaving industry. It was reputed to be the seventh richest town in England and the fourteenth richest in Europe. Much of the wealth is evidenced by the extremely large church paid for by the rich wool merchants.

The Greyhound at Lavenham

The Greyhound at Lavenham is a traditional English pub set in the heart of Lavenham, England's best-preserved Mediaeval village, in mid Suffolk. Originally the town gaol, the building dates from 1324, with the upper stories thought to have been added in the mid 14th Century when the building became a private residence, before becoming a hostelry in the 15th Century.

The Greyhound at Lavenham has a Bar area with simple wooden tables where you can enjoy bar food in an environment where dogs are allowed. The large Restaurant area has flexible seating for any group (booking is advisable for larger groups and at weekends) and a cosy ambience under the heavy timbered ceilings. We keep a range of Greene King and guest ales including IPA and Abbott Ale, as well as a comprehensive range of quality wines, spirits and soft drinks. We believe in serving generous portions of good home-cooked food at fair prices, from meat and fish dishes such as Haddock and Chips, Sirloin steak, lasagne and Suffolk Sausage and mash, to salads and vegetarian options. All of our food without exception - including our desserts - are homemade fresh on the premises. Outside we have a generous paved beer garden with ramp-free access to the road, and plenty of tables to soak up the Lavenham sunshine.

We also now offer cycle hire using a brand new fleet of bicycles, available for half or full days hire complete with tabards, backpacks and helmets.
